Learn about diamonds from 4C

The standard for identifying the quality of diamonds, Diamond 4C was founded in 1953, and 4C is the four elements of the diamond rating, such as Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut. The grading system effectively separates diamond ratings.

Color 成色

1/4

For most gem-quality diamonds, the color identification criteria depend on its colorlessness. A diamond that is chemically free and structurally perfect is like a pure water droplet. It has no color and is of higher value. GIA created the D to Z diamond color grading system to identify the degree of colorlessness by comparing diamonds to colorimetric stones under precisely controlled illumination and observation conditions.

Although the color differences between diamonds are so subtle that it is difficult for non-professionals to distinguish, it can cause significant differences in diamond quality and price.

Clarity 淨度

2/4

Every diamond is unique. Nature makes every diamond as special as the person wearing it. The natural clarity grade of a diamond, also known as inclusions, provides a special fingerprint of the diamond. Inclusions are also important features in the identification of diamonds, including minerals or cracks. Common inclusions include Cloud, Feather, Included Crystal, and Needle. GIA Laboratories uses a set of rigorous standards and specifications to describe the type, quantity, location, size and visibility of diamond inclusions. All diamond clarity is graded under a 10x magnification, so many inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.

Cut 車工

3/4

The finer the diamonds are, the more dazzling the diamonds are: many people often confuse the cutting and shapes of the diamonds. In fact, the diamond cutting about how the diamond face is cut. No matter which shape of diamond, as long as it is a beautifully cut diamond, it is a masterpiece of diamond cutters. Because a perfect cut diamond can condense more light, reflect more light, and give diamonds a higher value. Don't worry if you cannot judge the quality of the diamonds. When you buy diamonds, you can compare the light refraction. A diamond of a top-notch worker, even a simple setting, looks dazzling.

The cut and polished diamonds are not shining. The function of cutting is to cut the diamond into a shape that maximizes the reflection of the light. The cutting of diamonds is also different because of the shape, quantity and arrangement of the facets, such as: "BRILLIANT", "STEP", "MIXED", etc.

Carat 克拉

4/4

Carat is the weight unit of diamonds. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. It is said that the weight used by early diamond merchants to weigh diamonds is the fruit of the carob tree, and one such fruit weighs about 200 milligrams. Because the density of diamonds is essentially the same, the heavier the diamond, the more precious it is. The bigger the diamond, the more rare the value of each carat.

On the GIA report, the weight of the diamond is recorded as the second decimal place below one carat, and the third decimal place is not counted. Unless the third decimal place is 0.009, the carry can be made 0.01.

The weight of the diamond is in carats. Each carat is divided into 100 points, so a 0.75 carat diamond is equivalent to 75 points. Carat is the easiest to decide in 4C, but even two diamonds of the same weight will have a large difference in value due to differences in mechanics, color and clarity. Usually the bigger the diamond, the rarer it is. It is worth noting that the price of one carat and two carats of diamonds is not simply doubled.
